Background of the Study

Digital transformation in banking is critical for streamlining operations and eliminating redundancies that inflate costs and reduce efficiency. Co-operative Bank of Nigeria has embarked on an ambitious digital transformation strategy aimed at automating processes, integrating disparate systems, and leveraging data analytics to improve operational efficiency (Adesanya, 2023; Obi, 2023). The bank’s strategy involves the implementation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, cloud computing, and robotic process automation (RPA) to harmonize workflows across various departments. These initiatives are designed to reduce manual interventions, minimize errors, and accelerate service delivery.

The transformation strategy is driven by the need to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. By reducing operational redundancies, Co-operative Bank can allocate resources more effectively, lower operational costs, and enhance customer service quality. The strategy also emphasizes real-time data integration and cross-functional collaboration, enabling the bank to make informed decisions swiftly and respond to market dynamics with agility (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, the digital transformation initiative supports regulatory compliance by ensuring that operational processes are transparent, auditable, and aligned with industry standards.

The bank’s digital transformation strategy is underpinned by extensive research and strategic planning. Stakeholder engagement, employee training, and continuous system upgrades are integral components of the implementation process. This comprehensive approach not only addresses existing inefficiencies but also anticipates future operational challenges by establishing a flexible and scalable digital infrastructure (Chinwe, 2025). The case study of Co-operative Bank of Nigeria provides a valuable framework for understanding how digital transformation can reduce operational redundancies and drive overall efficiency in the banking sector.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the comprehensive digital transformation strategy, Co-operative Bank of Nigeria continues to experience operational redundancies that hinder efficiency. One major issue is the difficulty in fully integrating new digital systems with existing legacy infrastructure, which results in data silos and duplicated processes (Onyema, 2023). These integration challenges lead to inconsistencies in data flow and increased manual reconciliation efforts. Additionally, resistance to change among employees and inadequate training further exacerbate the problem, as staff may revert to traditional methods when faced with unfamiliar digital tools.

Another challenge is the scalability of the digital transformation initiatives. While initial implementations have shown promise in reducing redundancies, the rapid pace of technological change and evolving business processes necessitate continuous updates and process reengineering. This ongoing need for system upgrades can strain resources and disrupt workflow, particularly during transitional periods (Uche, 2023). Furthermore, the lack of standardized metrics to measure the reduction of operational redundancies makes it difficult to assess the true impact of the transformation strategy, thereby hindering efforts to optimize processes fully.

These operational challenges underscore the need for a detailed evaluation of the digital transformation strategy. A comprehensive investigation is essential to identify the specific factors that contribute to persistent redundancies and to develop actionable strategies that can ensure smoother integration, effective change management, and sustainable operational improvements.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of digital transformation strategy execution on reducing operational redundancies at Co-operative Bank of Nigeria.

2. To identify integration and change management challenges associated with the digital transformation initiatives.

3. To propose recommendations for optimizing digital processes to enhance operational efficiency.

Research Questions

1. How does digital transformation affect operational redundancies at Co-operative Bank of Nigeria?

2. What integration and change management challenges impede the effective execution of digital transformation strategies?

3. How can the bank optimize its digital transformation initiatives to reduce operational redundancies?

Research Hypotheses

1. H₀: Digital transformation strategy execution does not significantly reduce operational redundancies at Co-operative Bank of Nigeria.

2. H₀: Integration challenges do not significantly impact the reduction of operational redundancies.

3. H₀: Optimization strategies do not significantly improve operational efficiency.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the digital transformation initiatives at Co-operative Bank of Nigeria, utilizing operational data, system performance reports, and employee interviews. Limitations include potential data integration issues and the dynamic nature of digital technologies.

Definitions of Terms

• Digital Transformation Strategy: A comprehensive plan to integrate digital technologies into all areas of a business.

• Operational Redundancies: Duplicate or inefficient processes that result in wasted resources.

• Change Management: The process of managing transitions in organizational processes and technology.
